What does 3-step dimmable mean?

The biggest advantage of a 3-step dimmable pendant light is that you can adjust the brightness without a dimmer. Using your existing wall switch, you cycle between three levels: 100% brightness, 50% brightness and 7% brightness. That takes you from bright, functional light to soft ambient light, without changing anything about your wiring.

How does the dimming work?

You switch the light on, then briefly switch it off and back on again to cycle through the three dimming settings. If you operate the switch at a regular pace, it simply turns on or off at the last brightness level you used: the light has a memory function and remembers your choice. One thing to note: the dimming function is built-in, so do not use an external dimmer with these lights.

Which rooms are 3-step dimmable lights good for?

Anywhere you want different levels of light at different times. Above the dining table, you can switch from bright light while you eat to soft, ambient light afterwards. Over a desk or kitchen worktop, you'll often want full brightness, while 7% in the evening can be enough to create a calm atmosphere. It's just as handy in the living room or bedroom, where you can dim the light without any extra installation, for example in a rented home where you'd rather not fit a dimmer.

With a 3-step dimmable light, you can choose from three fixed brightness levels, while a wall dimmer allows you to adjust the brightness smoothly. Already have a pendant light at home?

If you'd like to make your current pendant light 3-step dimmable, there's no need to buy a new one. Just choose a 3-step dimmable E27 bulb; for smaller lampholders, there are also 3-step dimmable E14 bulbs and G9 bulbs. These work in exactly the same way: dimming via the on/off switch, with no separate dimmer.
