Glass is one of the most popular materials for ceiling lights, and it is easy to see why. It is timeless, works with almost any interior style and has a direct effect on how the light fills the room. As a ceiling light provides the main lighting, the type of glass can make a bigger difference than you might expect, from clear, functional light to a soft, atmospheric glow. The types of glass
Opal-white glass, also known as opal glass, is the most popular choice for a ceiling light. It spreads the light softly and evenly and prevents glare. Transparent glass shows the light source and gives powerful light, perfect in combination with a filament bulb. Amber glass gives a warm, golden glow and creates a cosy atmosphere, while smoked glass, often with a mirror effect, looks sleek and chic. You will also come across ombre glass with a colour gradient. Keep in mind that tinted glass such as amber and smoked lets through slightly less light than opal-white or clear glass.
One shade or several globes?
Ceiling lights with one large glass shade give calm, even light: ideal for the hallway, landing or bedroom. Which light bulb do you choose?
Glass ceiling lights usually work with an E27 light source, while multi-light models with smaller globes often have an E14 or G9 lamp holder. If the glass is transparent, a filament bulb with a visible filament looks great; with opal-white glass the light source stays hidden and an ordinary lamp is enough. Choose warm white light (around 2700K) for the living room and bedroom, and clear white for the kitchen or storage room. With small globes, pay attention to the size of the light source: sometimes a Ø45mm bulb is needed as an Ø60mm bulb might be too big.
