Light where you walk
Outdoor floor lamps are ideal for lighting garden paths, driveways, borders and patios. They provide an even spread of light while also creating a warm atmosphere in the garden. A façade lamp casts light from above, leaving a large part of your garden in the dark, while floor lamps bring the light further into the garden, exactly where you walk.
Where do you find what?
Solar lights need no wiring, so you can place them wherever you like. Stainless steel bollard lights are particularly resistant to the weather. Lamps with a socket bring power into your garden while keeping the connection neatly concealed. Models with a sensor switch on automatically as you approach. And smart WiFi sets can be operated via an app.
Which height do you choose?
You can choose from compact bollard lights, taller standing models and modern designs with integrated LED lighting. A low bollard lamp mainly lights the path itself and looks subtle among the planting, while a taller model lights a larger area and works more like a beacon. Along a path, place them alternately rather than directly opposite each other, so you get a more natural lighting effect.
Wired or solar?
Solar is the simplest option: put it in the ground and you are done, with no wiring or electricity costs. If you want more brightness or reliable performance all year round, choose mains power. Keep in mind that you will then need to run a cable into the garden. Use an underground power cable for this, and make a note of where it runs before you fill in the trench.
What to look for
Pay attention to the stated protection rating (IP rating): a floor lamp stands low to the ground, where water can splash up and the ground can remain wet after a shower. Aim the light downwards rather than up into the air where possible: this is more considerate towards your neighbours and less disruptive to nocturnal animals.
