Recessed spotlights

What is a recessed spotlight?

A recessed spotlight is built into a ceiling, cabinet or shelf. Only the light is visible, while the fitting itself stays largely out of sight. These spotlights provide clear, focused lighting without taking up much space. The result is a sleek, understated look that puts the focus on the lighting rather than the fitting itself.

Where do you use recessed spotlights?

Recessed spotlights are often used in kitchens and bathrooms, where you want practical lighting without anything protruding from the ceiling. They can also be used to highlight specific features, such as a bookcase or your (walk-in) wardrobe. They work particularly well in hallways, entrance halls and beneath lowered ceilings, helping to keep the ceiling looking clean and uncluttered.

What to look for when choosing

When choosing recessed spotlights, it is important to consider the installation depth and energy consumption. First, measure how much space you have above the ceiling or inside the cabinet, and check the required cut-out size.

If you want to use the spotlights in a damp area, such as a bathroom or kitchen, choose a model with at least an IP44 rating. Take a look at our bathroom spotlights for suitable options.

It is also worth considering tiltable models if you want to direct the light. When lighting a workspace, you may also want to look at the UGR value or choose a model with a dim-to-warm function. If recessed installation is not possible, for example because you have a concrete ceiling, surface-mounted spotlights are a good alternative.

Which light source do you choose?

Most recessed spotlights have a GU10 lamp holder, while larger, adjustable models often use AR111 bulbs. There are also recessed spotlights with integrated LED, some of which allow you to adjust the colour temperature.

Choose a narrow beam angle if you want to highlight a cabinet or object, or a wide beam angle to spread the light more evenly throughout a room. In the kitchen, cool white light works well for a bright, functional space, while warm white light creates a softer atmosphere in the living room.
