Types of spotlights

Recessed spotlights are perfect for ceilings, cabinets or shelves, leaving the fitting largely concealed for a sleek finish. Surface-mounted spotlights are fixed directly to the ceiling, so the fitting remains visible. Ceiling spotlights range from single spotlights to multi-light ceiling lamps with adjustable spotlights. With track spotlights, the individual spotlights can be moved along the track, making it easy to adjust the lighting as your needs change.

Recessed or surface-mounted?

When choosing spotlights, consider whether recessed or surface-mounted models are more suitable for your space. Recessed spotlights are installed into the ceiling, leaving the fitting concealed for a clean finish. However, you need enough space above the ceiling for installation, so always check the required installation depth.

Surface-mounted spotlights are fixed directly to the ceiling, with the entire fitting remaining visible. They are a practical option for concrete ceilings or where recessed installation is not possible or preferred. They also make the spotlight a more visible part of the interior.

How many spotlights do you need?

The number of spotlights you need depends on what you want to light. For accent lighting, such as highlighting a painting or alcove, a few spotlights with a narrow beam angle may be enough. To light an entire room evenly, distribute more spotlights across the ceiling and choose a wider beam angle. In the kitchen, consider the position of your worktop when planning your spotlights. If they are installed too far back, they may cast light behind you rather than onto the work surface.

Which bulb do you choose?

Most spotlights have a GU10 bulb fitting, while larger models may use AR111 bulbs. To highlight a specific area, choose a bulb with a narrow beam angle. For general lighting, a wide beam angle is more suitable.

Choose warm white light for living rooms and bedrooms, or cool white light for kitchens and workspaces. Some spotlights have integrated LED, so there is no need to choose a bulb separately.
