What is a flush ceiling light?

A flush ceiling light is a ceiling light mounted flat against the ceiling, without a pendant or cord in between, keeping the space beneath it completely clear. This makes a flush ceiling light a practical form of main lighting: it provides even light and stays out of the way.

When do you choose a flush ceiling light?

A flush ceiling light is ideal when you have limited space or a low ceiling. This makes it particularly suitable for hallways and landings, where you walk directly underneath the light. In a bedroom with a sloping roof or low ceiling, a flush model creates a more spacious feel. They are also a practical choice for storage rooms, meter cupboards, attics and bathrooms. You often see them in smaller apartments, where ceiling height can be more limited.

What to look for when choosing

Consider the diameter in relation to the size of the room: a small model in a large room may not provide enough light. Also pay attention to the spread of light. Because a flush ceiling light sits close to the ceiling, it mainly spreads light downwards and to the sides. A shade made of opal-white glass or fabric helps prevent glare when you walk underneath it. For a damp space such as the bathroom, pay attention to the stated protection rating (IP rating).

Which light source should you choose?

Flush ceiling lights with a lamp holder usually use an E27 or E14 light source. With flat models, pay attention to which bulb size is compatible: you will often need a Ø45 mm bulb for a low shade, as a Ø60 mm bulb may be too large. There are also many LED ceiling lights with an integrated LED, which sit closer to the ceiling because they do not require a lamp holder. Choose warm white light (around 2700K) for the bedroom or hallway, and clear white light for the storage room or workspace.
